From the desk of... Tracey A. Wright, Principal

August 28, 2020

Dear PS 39 Families:

I want to officially welcome you to the 2020-21 School Year! For those of you who are new to our school, I want you to know that we are a passionate and dedicated group of caring educators constantly working toward improving our craft. We care about excellence in ourselves and our students! We are driven to take learning seriously, while also making personal connections with our kids to help them succeed. This is my 11th year as principal of P.S. 39 and this school is where my heart lies. My administrative partner, Mr. Ponterio is in his 2nd year as A.P. and is a tremendous asset to our school community. We consider PS 39 the perfect opportunity and place to do the most important work in the world...helping our children and staff grow in all ways! There is no other place we would rather be!

During this pandemic, we are keeping a positive attitude as we look forward to the return of the children to the school building. We have put many protocols in place that I have shared with you in a video presentation so you will know the structures and procedures we will follow in school. We highlight the 4 behaviors to reduce spread of Covid-19 which include; physical distancing, wearing a face covering, keeping hands clean and staying home when sick. Whether you have chosen fully remote learning or the blended learning model, we are going to do our best to give your child a high-quality education with the most updated curriculum. As of today, we are still receiving guidance from the NYCDOE and we are working hard to provide a seamless plan that will involve synchronous, aka "live teaching", sessions when your child is blended remote or full-time remote. A new policy added on to our attendance is that your child must attend these live sessions when they are not in school in order to be counted as marked present. This is how attendance will be calculated. Please see our Google Meet Expectations for suggestions for you to help your child(ren) be prepared to work successfully during remote synchrnous instruction.

We have again been designated a "Lighthouse School" by Franklin Covey. This is a great achievement, many years in the making, by our entire community. Each day our students recite the 7 Habits to create a unified environment. We embody leadership skills, respect and our Tiger’s win-win attitude. Our students learn the importance of getting along and resolving conflict peacefully using research-based tools to teach them to become civic-minded citizens.

An update on construction: we have stopped construction of the new gym at this time but have been assured they will continue once funding resumes. This beautiful new space will greatly enhance our physical education instruction in the near future.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to get to know all of you and engage in the educational process together. We are looking forward to continuing to build relationships with returning families. We are big believers in communication and honesty. If we are honest with each other and communicate with each other then we will be successful. We also believe that building strong relationships between home and school is a key factor in increasing student achievement.

As your principal, my door is always open and I welcome your input. I strongly believe that parental involvement is an essential component of student success. A wise person said, “Be involved, your child’s future depends on it.”

We can’t wait to meet you!

In partnership,

Tracey A. Wright

Principal, P.S. 39
