Resources for you and your child...
Resources for you and your child...

December 16, 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the fallen educators and children of Newtown Connecticut. Newtown is a very small close knit community, much like us here on Staten Island. I know this first hand because I grew up in the vicinity and attended schools in Woodbury, Connecticut as a child and teenager. We, like you, are very saddened and concerned by the tragic news and want to reassure you that we will continue to do everything in our power to keep your children safe.

We will continue to regularly review our safety procedures and have regular safety drills (fire, bus, soft and hard lockdown) to prepare our children for situations we hope to never have to face. Please know you are invited to attend our monthly safety meetings which are listed on the school calendar. Our next meeting is scheduled for December 21st at 9:00AM.

Below please find links to websites that can help you prepare for questions and concerns your children may have. Experts in the field consistently recommend allowing children to express their concerns, but limit their exposure to the media. It is important to reassure your children that the adults in their lives are doing everything they can to keep their school and home safe.

If you observe any symptoms of stress in your child, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, Guidance Counselor Mr. Fernando, or Social Worker Darlene DeForte. If you have any questions or concerns about PS 39’s safety procedures, contact Principal Tracey Wright or Asst. Principal I.A. Kasandra Lopez Garcia.

Tracey A. Wright, Principal

Kasandra Lopez-Garcia, Assistant Principal I.A.
