 Dear PS 39 Community,

We are very happy and privileged to be starting another year as assistant principals here at PS 39!

Through our experiences as educators and parents we have realized that of all the things we do for our children, reading to them and with them has the most amazing results!

When you share a book with your child you are sharing your time, your interests, your voice, your lap, your love! Through this experience they will learn to love books and will learn how to read. Dr. Seuss put it best, “The more you read, the more you know.”

As our children grow as people and readers remember they are never too old to enjoy being read to! Even students who can read on their own appreciate hearing a good story and discussing ones they’ve read. If you would like help finding the perfect book please do not hesitate to contact the school.

While your child is here at PS 39 they will enjoy hearing books and stories read aloud by their teacher daily. Every student will be individually assessed by their teacher using Teachers College reading assessments to determine their independent reading level (A – Z). Students will be able to select books they are interested in on their level from the classroom and school library. In addition to having time to read in school they will be bringing home their book baggies daily. Please make sure your child takes care of these borrowed books and returns them. They should read for at least 20 minutes a night to build stamina that will benefit them as their reading levels increase and when they take state reading tests.

We are looking forward to a great school year! Please do not hesitate to contact the school with any questions and concerns!

Sincerely,

Kasandra Lopez-Garcia &    Keena Flournoy-White
