Summer 2017 Letter

Summer Letter
Summer Letter

Dear Parents and Guardians of P.S. 39 Students:

Thank you for a wonderful school year.  Your children are leaving for the summer with many new skills and strategies that we hope they will utilize and enhance throughout the summer. Please make sure your child completes the summer homework and fills out the July and August Reading Log. Please provide your child with the time and tools they will need to complete these assignments as they are due to their teacher on the first day of school, Wednesday, September 7, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. Doors will open at 7:35 a.m. for breakfast.  Please read the wonderful article published about us in the Staten Island Advance in the "Latest News" section of this website.

Supply lists for grades K-5 are available online on the homepage of this website. In addition to completing homework assignments, we encourage you to visit the public library and have your child carry a book with them to read throughout the summer, even on car and plane trips.  Engage your child in math problem solving discussion, i.e. If ice cream costs $2 each, how much will we spend for our family of 5 to have ice cream? Expose your children to the rich history of our borough and city by visiting places like the Staten Island Ferry and discussing all that you see.  Investigate the science around us, i.e. Compare the evaporation of water in sun vs. the shade.  Summer vacation is the perfect opportunity for children to learn from and with their first teachers, you.

The Big Apple Games Program is back! The Recreational Program, designed as an extension of the PSAL, accommodates children in grades 2 through 8, including students with special needs. This summer’s Program will operate from Tuesday, July 5th, 2017 to Thursday, July 27th, 2017. The program offers a variety of recreational opportunities for our children.  Registration is free for students and the program will operate from 9:00a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Summer School for mandated students, "at-risk" students and English Language Learners takes place at P.S. 13 as in past summers.  A school bus takes the children from P.S. 39 to P.S. 13 each morning Monday-Thursday at 7:36 a.m. Summer school is from July 5th- August 10th from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Please see Ms. Wright or Ms. DeFilippi if you have any questions.

As you are aware, we are a uniform school.  Uniforms can be purchased at www.cookieskids.com or the school has limited sizes available for purchase.  Please contact our Parent Coordinator, Rosemarie DeFilippi at 718-447-4543 extension 2534. We will also have a Uniform Day/Night with Cookies Kids on July 12th from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m.

We are still waiting for scores for the New York State ELA and Math exams.  We will notify 3rd-5th grade parents when they are available.

As always please refer to the school website for the latest information and up to date news at www.ps39R.org.

Please sign up for the "notify me" feature on the home page of our website.  This feature allows us to send you short reminders regarding meetings, events, school closings or emergencies via email or text message to your cell phone.  At PS 39 we believe the home-school connection is a high priority for making your child's school career a success.

As always, if you need any help or have any questions; we are here to help you and your family!  We wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and fun-filled summer vacation.

Sincerely,

Tracey A. Wright
