From the desk of Tracey Wright: January 2017 Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Congratulations to us! P.S. 39 is a Lighthouse School. Our leadership focus has led us to this honor which is bestowed upon us by Franklin Covey, the creators of the Leader in Me. We will have a celebration with the school community and unveil the mural forthcoming. I would like to welcome everyone back from the holiday season and extend my best wishes for a peaceful and prosperous New Year. I am very appreciative by the generosity of the staff and families during this holiday time and feel fortunate and grateful each day to be your principal. I want to thank the members of our PTA and all the parent volunteers who worked so hard on the beautiful Holiday Fair for the children. They did a lovely job and the children really enjoyed the experience. Also, a big thank you for your attendance at the Winter Concert. Mr. Thomas and your children worked very hard to display their musical skills and talents. We are so proud of them.

I am pleased to announce that we have received 2 grants for technology this year. Borough President Oddo has granted us $80,000 and Councilman Matteo has helped us with $75,000. The technology committee will meet and discuss digital literacy, google classrooms and how to further our journey to upgrade our technology. I want to thank BP Oddo and Councilman Matteo for their ever-present concern for our children and P.S. 39.  In addition, upgrade for the auditorium is in the next stages for a sound system and lighting to support our arts program. Construction is coming along quickly to complete the new Arrochar Park which we will utilize for the children. Thank you to all who are helping us keep safe during stop and drop and pick-up with the new crosswalk. Please stay in line in the morning for safety.

If you have applied for your child to be tested for the Gifted and Talented Program, your child will be tested next week on January 11th.

Math Remediation continues, we are in search of a Title III for our ESL students afterschool, READ will begin on January 18th and we are putting together the Test Sophistication Academy for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders to begin on January 25th. The basketball team season will begin in 2 weeks for 5th grade boys and girls only.

The Office of Student Enrollment welcomes you to Kindergarten Admissions! The kindergarten application period is now open and families can apply anytime until January 13, 2017. All applications received by the January 13th deadline are treated the same—our application process is not first-come, first-served. Apply one of three ways: Online via our application site at Schools.nyc.gov/choicesenrollment/elementary/kindergarten.html. over the phone by calling 718-935-2400 between 8AM-6PM or in person at the Family Welcome Center located at Petrides School, 715 Ocean Terrace.

Please contact Rosemarie DeFilippi if you have additional questions about the process. We encourage all siblings of our students to register for Kindergarten as soon as possible to ensure a placement here in their zoned school.

Now that the colder weather has arrived, please dress your child warmly with layers and ensure he/she child is wearing a scarf, hat, and gloves.

Congratulations to Mr. Padilla’s class for the highest attendance rate in the month of December and enjoy the pizza party!

Sincerely,

Tracey Wright, Principal
