WELCOME BACK to School Year 2019-20

Dear P.S. 39 Families:

I want to officially welcome all of you to the 2019-20 School Year! For those of you who are new to our school, I want you to know that you are coming to an absolutely wonderful place. Our teachers and staff are passionate, caring, hardworking, and always learning something new for the benefit of your children. We are a collaborative and driven group of people who take learning seriously while also making personal connections that help kids succeed. Please read the Staten Island Advance article about our school at the "Latest News" section of this website.

We have been redesignated as a "Lighthouse School" by Franklin Covey.  This is a great achievement many years in the making by our entire community.  Each day our students recite the 7 Habits to create a unified environment. We embody leadership skills, respect and our Tiger’s win-win attitude. Our students learn the importance of getting along and resolving conflict peacefully using research-based tools to teach them to become civic-minded citizens.

This is my 10th yer as the principal of P.S. 39, this school is where my heart lies, and I consider it the perfect opportunity and place to do the most important work in the world...helping our community grow in all ways! There is no other place I would rather be!

I am thrilled at the opportunity to get to know all of you this year and engage in the educational process together. I am also looking forward to continuing building relationships with returning families. I am a big believer in communication and honesty. If we are honest with each other and communicate with each other then we will be successful. I also believe that building strong relationships between home and school is a key factor in increasing student achievement. As principal, my door is always open and I welcome your input. I strongly believe that parental involvement is an essential component of student success. A wise person said, “Be involved, your child’s future depends on it.” Research continues to show increased academic achievement and high school graduation rates for students whose parents are engaged in the educational process.

This year, students in 4th and 5th grades will be departmentalized. This means that students will be assigned to a homeroom teacher and change classes for the major subject areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.  This is an initiative offered and supported by the Department of Education to foster equity and excellence.  It also assists our teachers in becoming "content specialists" in their subject area.  We are preparing for our 2nd year under this initiative and strengthening the Algebra 4 All program.

We will break ground this year for a brand new gym in the small school yard.  P.S. 39 was chosen by the Mayor's P.E. initiative to receive this new space in order to increase physical education for our students.

I am excited to announce you will have a chance to meet all of our teachers at our Family Night on Thursday, September 12th, 4:30-7:30 p.m. You will also have an opportunity to sign up for Notify Me that will allow you to stay informed about what is going on at school.

School Hours:  8:00 a.m.-2:20 p.m. Please be sure to have your child/children here on time. Students who are consistently late are at a clear disadvantage and usually arrive feeling frantic and unprepared. All students who arrive after 8:00 a.m. receive a late pass and are recorded as late.

Breakfast is served at 7:35 a.m. and is free for all children

Please read and access the school uniform information on our school website. The uniform is a white polo shirt and navy blue pants, shorts, sweatpants (on Gym days), skirts or skorts. There are directions for ordering on the site and shipping is free to your home.  Let Ms. DeFilippi know if you need any assistance.

School Supply List:

School supply lists for each grade level are posted on our school’s website at under Latest News. You may drop off your supplies the week of August 26th or September 3rd from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Y Afterschool Program:

If you need afterschool care, you may sign up for the Y Afterschool Program from 2:20 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the rate of $235/month. We will begin this service the first day of school. If you sign up a second child, there is a $25 discount for that child. The payment schedule is in the application which can be accessed on the school website under Latest News.

Stop and Drop:

Mrs. DeFilippi will be in front of the school on Macfarland Avenue for stop and drop each morning. Staff is posted inside the school to supervise students and ensure safety at drop off.

Each month the P.T.A  will send home a Tiger Pause newsletter telling you what’s happening at P.S. 39. We will include a monthly calendar with all activities. Information will also be available on our school website at

As a reminder, the first day of school is Thursday, September 5, 2019 for all students. We will be off for Rosh Hashanah on Monday, September 30th and Tuesday, October 1st and we will also be off for Yom Kippur on Wednesday, October 9th.

I look forward to working with you and your child. We can’t wait to meet you!
